FRIDAY | Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul, & Mary

Posted on June 22, 2013

As a successful artist and activist, Peter Yarrow’s talent is legendary.  From the trio Peter, Paul & Mary, Yarrow produced some of the most influential songs including “Puff the Magic Dragon,” “Day is Done,” and “Light One Candle.” Touring as a trio for nearly 10 years, the group separated in 1970 to pursue individual careers. After the split, Yarrow continued to write music and earned an Emmy Award for the television series based on “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

Yarrow’s work as a solo artist is stellar, turning any venue into a living room and encouraging the audience to change their part of the world.  Yarrow has earned many gold and platinum albums, been awarded numerous Grammy Awards, and nominated for several more. The most important aspect of Yarrow’s musical career is that he aims to bring the folk renaissance of the 1960s to the hearts and homes of the American public.

His musical creativity has always gone hand-in-hand with his commitment to social justice and equality in society. Since the 1960s, he has organized, produced and performed at charitable and political events. Yarrow founded Operation Respect in 2000, a nonprofit organization that aims to reduce school violence by teaching children respect for diversity. Yarrow believes that meaningful alterations in educational policy could play a critical role in preventing the next generation from bias and discrimination.

Through a peace-seeking initiative, Yarrow’s 50 years of activism has led him to believe that if people express their voices, they can become a powerful force to transform society. At the age of 73, Yarrow continues to focus on current issues that call him to activism while delivering memorable performances to audiences of all ages.

Joining Yarrow on Friday will be Mustard’s Retreat, a duo including David Tamulevich and Michael Hough. As short order cooks, they discovered a mutual interest for music and performing in 1974. One day after work, they put together three songs to perform at a local coffeehouse’s open mike night. Thirty-seven years later, they have nine highly acclaimed recordings of their own and have performed more than 4,000 shows. Together, Yarrow and Mustard’s Retreat are sure to bring an enjoyable show to Bicentennial Park.
